The name The Virtual Hebrides may be recognised by some as a name used in the past by www.hebrides.com, this site, originally developed by the guys from Eolas (1996) has long since gone. The site will be sadly missed by many and the development of our "Virtual Hebrides" is an attempt to fill the gap left by the demise of hebrides.com.
The original creators of this site started building our site several years ago. As he, was at that time, based on the Isle of Scalpay, he started by building a small site about the island which eventually develolped into www.scalpay.com. Along side this development he built several versions of sites about the Hebrides, the last one being The Hebrides Network. When Eolas ceased using the term "virtual hebrides" for www.hebrides.com he registered our domain name. When it became clear that their site was about to fold he started to develop a replacement. Those of you who visited the Eolas site would have recognised the enormous amount of effort put in by Sam, Scott, Kelvin, Finlay and all the other guys. Sadly all that wonderfull work has now gone but we hope to adapt some aspects and articles for inclusion on this site. The term "Virtual" is a term often used such as Virtual Skye etc - we just thought we should explain and reduce confusion!
The Scalpay website was one of the first community websites in the area and from day one it had been the intention to develop other sites for the other areas of the islands. We were happy to see other sites develop and the need to develop specific sites was reduced. Upon occassion we did get a little upset by similar ventures being developed that were similar to ones planned by ourselves but no-one can claim that their "good idea" is exclusive. Sadly though many of these sites have not managed to develop the traffic that they merit, it is hoped that as we add the links to these sites their traffic will increase and the average person browsing the internet will be able to find these sites more easily.
If you have a website which has anything to do with the Hebrides please send us your details and we will add a link. www.hebrides.com is now a photographic gallery for the work of Sam Maynard, the site is well worth a visit.
