Canada Goose Branta canadensis L 90 100, W 165 180. N American species, split into several races of various sizes. Introduced to Europe. Also spontaneous vagrants claimed in Britain. Breeds at inland waters, preferably large and open ones, also in forest districts. English population mainly sedentary, large Swedish one migrates to S Sweden and down to Netherlands. Feeds much in shallow water, like a swan, but also on pasture and arable fields. Not unlike an Ansergoose at a distance, neck appearing dark, pale breast striking, but is larger and longer-necked; flight more majestic. Call a loud dissonant honk, 'rhot', at times in see-sawing duets; in flight disyllabic, second note in falsetto, 'rho-UT (can also be rendered 'gah-HONK'). R
