Redshank
Tringa totanus L 27. Typical coastal bird, commonest
wader on estuaries and coastal marshes, on passage
and in winter often in large flocks. Breeds
in wet meadows, also inland on bogs and upland
moors. Rather uniform grey-brown with red legs
(more orange-red m juvenile; cf. female Ruff,
immature Spotted Redshankj. In flight instantly
recognised by broad white bars along rear edges
of wings, conspicuous at long range also is
white rump/tail. Ringing, mellow, melancholy
call 'TEU-hu, TEUhuhu', song a loud 'TOOIe-TOOIe-TOOIe-
. . . chu-chu-chu-wee lYO-weelYO-weelYO'. Alarm
an irritatingly persistant 'kip- kip-kip- .
