Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus Length 15cm, Wingspan
37cm. The commonest storm-petrel in Europe, breeding
in both N and W coasts and in Mediterranean. Occasionally
in huge flocks after westerly autumn storms, when may
also be encountered inland. Smallest storm-petrel with
rather blunt-tipped wings which are generally held straight.
Darker than Leach's, lacking pale upper wing-panel (only
narrow trace), but having prominent white band on underwing.
Rump pure white, tail square-cut. Flight recalling bat,
wingbeats rapid and fluttering without the shearwater-like
glides of Leach's. Follows ships. RSP
