White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons L 60--73, W 130 160. Breeds on arctic tundra. A western population (race flavirostris; rather big, bill long and yellow-orange, plumage fairly dark) breeds in W Greenland and winters in NW Britain (numerous), an eastern one (race albifrons; slightly smaller than flavirostris, bill weaker and predominantly pink, plumage somewhat paler) breeds along the Russian arctic coast and winters from England (uncommon) diagonally across Europe to Turkey and eastwards. Adult Whitefront has white blaze on forehead and black markings on belly, can be confused only with Lesser White-front. Distinguished from latter by generally perceptibly larger size, larger bill, by fact that forehead blaze is straight in side view and does not extend so far up on the forehead, also by lack of yellow eye-ring. Juvenile distinguished from juvenile Lesser White-front mainly by lack of yellow eye-ring, slightly paler plumage and larger size. Since white forehead blaze is absent during first autumn and nail of bill is dark, juvenile can at distance be confused with Bean Goose, but is told from latter by paler cheek with swarthy forehead and area around bill base together with slightly narrower white feather edges on upperparts. Flight much as in other Anser geese. Does not appear pale-winged like Greylag and Pink-foot, but nevertheless has slightly paler wing-coverts than Bean Goose. Commonest call is characteristically high-voiced'kyu-y0', almost laughing; more conventional cackles also given. W
