Castaways on Bomb Alert Colin and Patrick found a suspicious item on one of the beaches on Taransay on Tuesday. Recognising this as a possible danger they asked Ben Fogle for advice as he had been a naval cadet. Identifying the object as some kind of flare they acted quickly and called the Coast Guard using their satellite phone. The Coast Guard contacted the Navy at Faslane who flew to the Island and successfully disposed of the object. A statement from the Navy said that Petty Officer Alan Shaw was called out to to deal with a piece of explosive ordnance. This follows incidents where flares were washed ashore on the West Coast of Scotland from Beaufort's Dyke, a huge naval munitions dump in the Irish Sea two years ago. A statement from Faslane said that "a piece of explosive ordnance was successfuly disposed of by the Royal Navy's Clyde based diving team which has responsibility for tackling unexploded ordnance of whatvere age below the high water mark around the coasts of Scotland and Northern England." Whether this was a yachts flare or debris from a naval dump is not yet clear. Back |
