Isle of Harris web site (Southharris.com) is part of The Virtual Hebrides which is quickly becoming the most visited website in the Hebrides. The Virtual Hebrides is a not-for-profit organisation to promote the Outer Hebrides and it's businesses. One of our expanding industries is tourism so we aim to make this websites content appealing to visitors while providing all the relevant information for prospective tourists. The concept of The Virtual Hebrides started several years ago with the building of the first Scalpay which was a small website about the Isle of Scalpay, just off Harris. In July 1999 the Scalpay website was moved to new servers and the domain name www.scalpay.com was registered and the site soon grew to an enormous size. To cover the rest of the hebrides another site The Alternative Hebrides was built and later replaced by The Hebrides Network which was eventually integrated into The Virtual Hebrides (Eolas had developed a virtual hebrides at the time but it has now changed to a photographic site). The Isle of Harris has a fantastic history which is entertaining at times but often brutal. We hope to develop out history section to include some of these fascinating stories. We hope to develop www.southharris.com and www.leverburgh.com to eventually rival the Scalpay section but this will take a long time both in preparation and gathering of information, photography and the actual building of the pages. If you have an article, story, photograph or anything else that you think should be on this website please email us with the details.
