Northton: The small village of Northton is in the South of the Isle of Harris. Shown in the image to the left (click to enlarge), Northton has two small but very nice beaches. In the distance you can see the village of Leverburgh and beyond that the road stretching off towards Strond.
In Northton is the MacGillivary centre which is an excellent viewpoint and has toilets and parking (pictured right, click to enlarge). William MacGillivary was a famous naturalist and bird artist. Born in 1796 in Aberdeen he spent his childhood (from age of three) in the old village of Northton - North Town which was over/on the hill pictured below. William MacGillivary went to school at Obbe, now called Leverburgh in memory of Lord Leverhulme who invested heavily in the area..
The photograph to the left shows the view taken from the MacGillivary Centre at Northton. The old MacGillivary Farm at North Town would have been to the right of this picture infront of the hill (Chaipaval). Please check back in a couple of months when I will have finished an article on William Macgillivary, if you would like to be notified when this is complete please email me.
Northton, well croft 25 Northton, is home to two donkeys, Max & Minnie. Max & Minnie came from the Donkey Sanctuary having been rescued from abuse and now live a happy relaxed (even spoilt) existence taking in the Harris air. The Donkeys (click image to enlarge) get many visitors on a regular basis so they are very friendly, however, please be very carefull if you are feeding them - they sometimes have difficulty telling fingers from food - so please ensure that any food is able to be taken easily and safely.
The photograph to the left shows Max & Minnie with their summer coats which are much finer than their thick winter coats shown above..
