Bernera
Bernera (pictured left, click to enlarge) is located in Loch Roag on the south-west coast of Lewis, Great Bernera is about 5.5 miles long and up to three miles wide. The island is reached over the 'bridge over the Atlantic', and is relatively flat, only reaching just over 200 feet, with many lochans and rocky outcrops. There is a superb beach at Bosta, with stunning white sand. Wildlife includes multitudes of birds, including eagles and gannets, otters, seals and dolphins.
On Bernera you will find; a restored Norse mill and community centre and museum, standings stones, and Dun Baravat, an Iron Age dun. There was a 'riot' here in 1872, when local crofters -angered at eviction notices and the arrogance of Sir James Matheson's factor-were engaged in scuffles with the local law enforcement officers. The mainstay of the local population is fishing for lobsters. Loch fishing is available.
