| Geaarrannan Blackhouse Village was abandoned in 1974 when the last residents moved to Council houses in a village nearby. Being the last surviving group of such houses in the Islands, and having such an attractive setting their significance was recognised and the Blackhouse Village was formally designated as an outstanding conservation area in November 1976.
The restoration began in 1991 and the main work was completed in 2001. The Gearrannan Blackhouse Village was restored through the work of the Gearrrannan Trust, set up by the Western Isles Council in 1989. The Trust consists of representatives from the community and all members serve in a voluntary capacity.
