Muck An island ('island of pigs' or 'island of sea-pig or porpoise') three miles north-west of the mainland of Scotland at Sanna Point and three miles south-west of Eigg.
Muck is flat and relatively fertile, although it rises to 600 feet, and there are many species of seabirds including Puffins, Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Shearwaters as well as Sea-Eagles.
Muck was held by the Abbey of Iona, but passed to the MacLeans of Ardnamurchan, then to Clan Ranald, then was sold again and had several owners. Again much of the island was depopulated in the 19th century, the islanders emigrating to Nova Scotia: from 155 inhabitants in 1831 to 51 in 1891.
