Shiant Isles (3)

Sea Room an island lifeNigel Nicolson bought the Shiant Isles as an Oxford undergraduate in 1937 for £1,400 and gave them to his son (Adam) for his 21st birthday. Adam Nicolson, has recently published a book about the Shiants under the title of Sea Room. As he says there, the book is 'an attempt to tell the whole story, as I now understand it, of a tiny place in as many dimensions as possible: geologically, spiritually, botanically, historically, culturally, aesthetically, ornithologically, etymologically, emotionally, politically, socially, archaeologically and personally.' You can view some images from the book or order it online from Amazon.co.ukMore details can be found in our history section which includes more images and the story of the finding of the Bronze Age gold necklet found by two Scalpay fishermen.

The Shiant Isles now have their own website (as an extension to the book): www.shiantisles.net
