Scalpay (also known as Scalpaigh & Scalpa) is a beautiful island just off the coast of the Isle of Harris in the Western Isles / Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Our site is a community website for the island and has many points of interest for both visitors to the island and it's inhabitants. Originally developed by Scalpay Digital (who ceased trading 2001.) Scalpay.com will continue to be the major source of information about The Isle of Scalpay on the internet.
Our most recent addition is a gallery of Scalpay Photographs taken by photographer Dr. Bernard Blain in the mid 1960's. Mainly taken around Outend (which is under-represented on the site), the photographs show Scalpay life as it was at a very busy time in its' history. Support for our Scalpay section is great and we wish to thank Dr. Bernard Blain for allowing us to display this small collection. We also would like to thank Annag for all her help in sending us the images and her continued patience while we prepared the images for display. Click the image to go directly to the gallery.
One of the most popular aspects of the site remains the Gallery of old photographs where there are over 400 old photos. If you are researching your family tree, looking for a photo of a family member or just interested in old photos you will find this part of our history section most interesting. We are continually updating this site and are very appreciative of the support of our visitors and we can offer high resolution copies (that are printable) for those people who discover a long lost photo in this collection (security checks made).
Also in our history section are many interesting articles about the island and it's people. It is hoped that we will be able to continue developing this section of the site but we need the support of people like yourself. You may have an old magazine article, an old photograph or just an interesting story to tell, so if you would like to contribute please contact us with the details as soon as possible.
We hope that you enjoy your visit to scalpay.com but there is no real substitute for the real thing, so please take a look at some of the accommodation on offer and consider a "real" visit. Scalpay can be an excellent base for your visit to The Western Isles, being perfectly situated between South Harris and Lewis. For an overview of the island please visit our location section.
For those of you who like to sail - The island is an ideal place to berth for the night. Both the North (left) and South harbours are well sheltered and the island has many amenities including showers in the community hall (below) . You will find the Scalpachs (a person from the island is called a Scalpach) most friendly and helpful.
The old guestbook which was also very popular (having several hundred messages) has now been replaced by the new but you can view the old messages by Clicking Here. *Proving very popular is our Free Desktop Wallpaper Section If you would like to add details of your company, Bed and Breakfast establishment or anything else please contact us as soon as possible. All our services are free including listings.
