Before
the bridge linking The Isle of Scalpay to The Isle
of Harris was opened, Scalpay was only accessible
via the ferry.
Once the bridge was opened the ferry
ceased and the site was available for development.
A major part of the adjacent hill had been quarried
and the site had been used as a local tip. The site
looked destined to become derelict.
With
excellent access for larger vessels the site was identified
as an ideal location for development . Highlands and
Islands Enterprise decided to invest in the area by
building a factory unit to be rented by Stolt
Sea Farm Ltd (UK). The image above shows and arial
view of the site just after some land reclamation
had taken place with closer views to the right and
below (just click to enlarge).
A
new access road was built running from the Scalpay
bridge to the Stolt
Sea Farm Ltd (UK) fish processing factory unit.
The road is visible in the top picture (coming in
from the right).
Construction
was carried out by RJ Macleod. More images are available
on the next page with more
information on Stolt
Sea Farm Ltd (UK) available in the business
section .
