This photograph (click to enlarge) shows a man fishing in a loch in the Outer Hebrides, it looks very similar to our Loch so we put it in for now. Loch a' Duinn is a large and deep loch that has some history attatched to it. Although a fish farm cage is sited at the loch today, ther is still a large amount of Trout living and breeding healthily providing an excellent days fishing for anglers.
On the loch is a small island which, at one time housed a castle or fortified house. There still remains one or two stones including a corner stone which may have an inscription - we will add more details when we find them. Linking the "mainland" of Scalpay to the fortified building was a causeway. This causeway was invisible to the naked eye as it was a little below the waterline. This provided some security as you really needed to know where to put your feet next or you would certainly end up in "deep water". If you have any old photographs of the loch or Scalpay we would greatly appreciate any donations, all photographs will be returned once scanned. Back to : - Scalpay History (page 7)
