They
shall not pass: the Rev Alex Murdo MacLeod sets off
for the first of six weekend services, accompanied by
fisherman Donald MacLeod, who promises to blockade Tarbert.
Yesterday
was Question Day in Tarbert on Harris, the day when
devout Christians, having fasted during the previous
24 hours hold their faith up to the scrutiny of self-examination
in preparation for Communion tomorrow. But this week
in the Outer Hebrides has been less about self-examination
by the islanders, than outside scrutiny by mainlanders,
who sent their journalists and television crews more
often to mock or patronise than to inquire or comprehend.
