New Pier for Scalpay South Harbour

New Pier for Scalpay South Harbour£45,000 scheme creates jobs, aids fishermen The £45,000 redevelopment of the south harbour on Scalpay has been completed and local fishermen are delighted with the facility. The scheme includedthe redevelopment of the main harbour wall and new concrete slipway, installationof handrails, erection of new timber fenders and the restoration of the existing pier section.

The project, which created five training jobs over a year, was spearheaded by Harris Development Ltd and funded by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise and the European Social Fund. The Harbour will now provide adeequate protection for the smaller fishing vessels and will be used as a berthing facility for painting boats.

The local fishermen on Scalpay have expressed their delight at the high quality of works carried out and the excellent facility which has been restored to a high standard. General environmental improvements were also carried out to complete the project.

To mark the completion of the works and as a token of appreciationto everyone involved, an informal buffet was held in the Scalpay Community Centre. At the buffet, HDL's Development Officer, Donald John Morrison thanked everyone for their input over the 12 months, including partnership agencies who funded the project. This is HDL's second successful project on Harris undertaken through the Community Employment Initiative training programme, the first being the development last year of the MacGillivray Centre which won a commendation in the 1999 Civic Trusts Award.
