In
1993 the Association were informed that the Community
Centre project had won a major national honour, sharing
a prize in the Community Enterprise Awards. At an Awards
ceremony held in Cardiff on March 1 1994, in the presence
of HRH The Prince of Wales, Donald J Morrison, Alasdair
MacLeod and John MacDonald were presented with prizes
of a £1000 cheque, an engraved plague and a framed certificate.
On 9 November 176 the Village Hall Committee, at a public meeting, proposed that the time had come for them to disband and that it should transfer all it's functions to the Scalpay Community Association. These proposals were presented for discussion at the Association's AGM on 26 November 1976, after which the new Management Committee agreed to accept responsibility for the administration and operation of the hall. There was unanimous agreement that the need for two separate committees was not necessary.
It
was also felt that the Association were in a better
position to raise funds for the management of the facility.
The Village Hall Management Committee formally disbanded
in 1977, after 8 years in existence. The position of
the Trustees, however, under the Deed of Trust remained
unchanged. Their interests were and still are invested
in the property and site, should the Association have
to disband or were in financial difficulty. As there
was no longer a District Welfare Officer on the Island,
this qualifying office ceased to exist on the Board
of Trustees and another appointment was never made.
The management of the new Committee Centre, officially
opened in 1993, continues to be the same.
