Scalpay Community Hall (3)
From Tile Ashes of the Old - A Community Success
" What the Islanders of Scalpay have achieved is truly remarkable They hove shown dedication, persistence and no little ingenuity in raising this enormous sum "
The Scalpay Community Association were delighted and proud to announce the completion and official opening of the award winning £420,000 Community Centre Project Development on Friday 4 June 1993. The project marked the culmination of a remarkable community achievement.
In 1988 it was felt that the continuing deterioration of the village hall had reached the stage where it could no longer be ignored. It had survived over the years with constant maintenance, mainly by voluntary labour, but had deteriorated to such an extent that replacement was the only option.
On 2 September 1988, the Scalpay Community Association launched a major fundraising campaign to raise fiends for a new community centre. The campaign was launched through one of the biggest sale of works ever seen on the Island, when nearly £2,500 was raised in over 3 1/2 hours. Towards the end of 1992, as a result of numerous fund-raising activities and an appeal to trusts & charities and companies of trade & industry, the Association managed to raise £150,000 as their own contribution towards the development. The project also attracted public sector sponsorship of over £270,000. The overall development includes a fully equipped community centre, landscaping, environmental improvements, seawall and car-parking. In addition new toilet units, incorporating ladies and gents showers, were built to replace the temporary toilets provided by the Council in 1985.
