The
South Harbour on Scalpay is a well sheltered area which
is home to several fishing vessels. It has paid an important
part in the history of the Isle of Scalpay. If weather
is bad it is boats unable to make it to the North
Harbour take
shelter in the South Harbour and vice versa. This
remains as important today as it was in the past and
the South Harbour has recently had the old pier renovated.
Until
the new road was built in the 1950's, the sea went right
up to some of the houses which may have been convienient
at times but a little frightening when the weather was
bad. The new road created better access to other areas
of the island and also created a sea wall protecting
the nearby houses (today we are constantly hearing threats
from scientists that the sea level is rising, so the
building of this road may have some relevance in the
future).
