Scalpay village is the most densely populated area on Scalpay and where you find; the school, meeting hall, shops, fish processing factory and the churches.
In the past, when the fishing was good, the North Harbour was a busy area with many fishing vessels landing their large catches of herring and other fish. >
On many occassions the harbour was completely full of large fishing vessels, so much so that you could walk from boat to boat, across the widest point of the harbour.
The fishing industry provided work for all the islanders (plus a few) but unfortunately has declined drastically in more recent years due to the drastic reduction of fish stocks.
Scalpay village and the North Harbour remain a busy place today with the main industry remaining fishing but now days the boats fish for shellfish. At certain times of the year the herring fishing provides a welcome boost to the fishing fleets income.
