Diving
info
This
site can be dived along both sides. To the east of the
Scalpay Ferry Pier is a small, sandy, horseshoe bay.
Although shallow it is full of life. A wall begins at
the eastern edge of the bay, dropping vertically down
to 15 - 20m. From here a gentle slope leads to the centre
of the Kyles at around 30mThe best diving site is along
the wall which, apart from the odd boulder slope, is
continuous.
The
only time wind affects this site is if a strong westerly
or easterly is blowing against the run of the tide.
You can then get some impressive standing water in the
main stream. Currents through Kyles run at four knots
plus at the spring tides, which makes this a drift dive
if you have very good boat cover. Alternatively, it
must be cnsidered a slack water dive if you intend to
go in from the shore. Visibility is rarely less than
10m. This is a high energy site, so appropriate planning
and care should be taken. Check the tides with a local
person as slack can be variable.
