The
North Harbour (taken
from within the Scalpay School grounds).
In
the distance you can see the crane that was used to
manouvre the pieces of the Scalpay bridge during it's
construction. The building to the right is the minimarket,
our local "corner shop" where you can buy
virtually anything you need, and, if John Angus doesn't
stock it I am sure he will do his best to help you.
The house to the left of the minimarket belongs to the
Church of Scotland.
Before
the bridge (linking the Isle of Scalpay to the Isle
of Harris), was built missionaries would stay in the
house and conduct services in the small Church on Scalpay.
When the bridge was opened the church in Tarbert (Harris)
was then accessible on a sunday (the ferry linking Scalpay
to Harris did not run on a sunday) and there was no
longer a need for a missionary on Scalpay. The building
is now empty awaiting somebody to buy or lease it..
