This
is yet another ideal place for a dive, christened "The
Plumrose Gardens" by Phil Jones of Scalpay Diving
Services. The "Plumrose Garden" lies at
the eastern end of the southern shore. With a maximum
depth of 20m it consists of steep sided gullies running
out from a rocky shore. Tides run at 3 - 4 knots (spring)
so diving at high or low makes life a lot simpler. Very
strong easterlies render this site undiveable. Good
boat cover is essential.
Visibility
is often in excess of 15m, but lower at around 4 - 5m
when the plankton blooms. Parts of the site are covered
in large Plumroses with stalks as thick as a forearm
and when open the heads are 10 inches across. The colours
range from snow white to orange and green. There are
also large numbers of Dahlia Anemones. Sea squirts and
sponges fill the gaps there are left. Wrasse are common,
as are angler fish, on sand at the base of the gullies.
Scallops and sea pens are also in abundance.
