Scalpay
village, springtime, by Ivor M MacKay.
The
painting above by Ivor M MacKay shows the Scalpay Village
(from the south harbour), sitting up high, is the Free
Church. This is the main church on the Isle of Scalpay,
with the majority of the population attending services
here. Further to the right (not shown here) is the church
which belongs to the Church of Scotland which has a
much smaller congregation. The village itself has really
not changed very much over the years. If you visit the
History section of scalpay.com and click in the general
area of the village we have at present two old photographs
of the village. One of these is from around the 1950's
when the sea road (to the left of this painting) was
completed and the other from maybe a few hundred years
ago. If you study both photographs you will be able
to recognise several houses that are still here today.
One thing that has changed of this view recently is
the addition of a playpark for the children (which would
be roughly central if it were shown in this picture)
and the pier, which you can just see to the right, has
just been renovated and upgraded.
