The
above painting by Ivor M MacKay depicts the area which
can be found outside Scalpay Village.
To
the left can be seen the Church of Scotland. The houses
to the foreground of the picture are really quite close
to the sea, I often wonder what it would be like in
one of those houses in the middle of winter with a storm
howling around outside and then what it would be like
living there in the fantastic summer weather. In the
foreground you can see one of the many fishing vessels
that belong to Scalpay.
To
the right of this is a smaller vessel, which is the
most common size of boat used here. These boats are
used mainly to fish for Velvet Crabs but often they
are used to fish for Prawns. The larger boats also fish
for Prawns and crabs but some are equiped to trawl for
Scallops.
