Comments from a visitor to the Isle of Scalpay in the Outer Hebrides It wasn't the weather that attracted us, that's for sure, but occasionally there were a few brilliant, half-warm days - in-between the gales and rain. But that's what's so special about Scalpay for a kid to go on holiday to - when it's dry you could play football on the pitch, or other games around the island, with all the added bonus of being safe - on Scalpay you were 'free' to go where you wanted to, as everyone knew you were somewhere on the island, whereas in the towns and cities you would never be able to be out all day until 11 o'clock without parents around (even then you would be struggling!) And when it rained (if it ever did!) you had the factory to go to, then the hall once that was built and opened. That was one of the highlights of the holiday - to play indoor sports, pool and snooker, basically until 11 at night, while popping out to John Angus's shop, the Post Office or Murdo's shop to spend your money on sweets and ice creams. Then you had the football games on a Tuesday and Thursday evening - if enough people turned up who were brave enough to face the midges. That's what made this island the great place for a holiday for a kid. The freedom, the factory and hall, buying sweets at all hours of the day and night, able to stay out late every night, the football, and of course - the people. (Excluding one who lived near the helicopter pad!!!) All the holidays had by people through out the years will never be forgotten, and many great memories will always be there - that will explain to the locals why we kept returning year after year! (wishes to remain annonymous)
